For our second installment of Coaches Spotlight, we're learning more about one of our awesome basketball coaches; Sahil Lakhani. Sahil is a basketball coach and offers lessons for all types of players on Final Drill!
Background
Sahil's experience with basketball begins as early as 2 years old while he was playing on his mini hoop in his basement. "I played through middle school and then played recreationally after getting into high school." At around the age of 16, Sahil began coaching in youth clinics when it was available to him. He loved the sport and thought this was the best way to learn and give back to the sport he loved.

Sahil's first job in basketball began as a team manager for the Bradley University Women’s Basketball team. There, "I fell even more in love with the game and knew I wanted basketball coaching to be my career." After coaching at Bradley, Sahil then spent a year coaching youth and high school travel basketball. While coaching travel ball, he received an opportunity to be a graduate assistant coach at Frostburg State University. He always wanted to coach college basketball, and this role finally allowed his dream to become a reality, "My two years there allowed me to fulfill my dream of coaching in college". Sahil currently coaches youth travel basketball and soon will start coaching the Sophomore team at Taft High School in Chicago, IL along with individual training sessions that are available on Final Drill!
Coaching Philosophy
Coach Sahil's coaching philosophy revolves around helping individuals grow within their sports by teaching the game and teaching skills that will allow the individuals to succeed. He also aims to bring individuals together to create a team that will take care of each other on and off the court. "I firmly believe that teams that can support each other through good and bad days will have that ability to persevere and achieve success".

Coach Sahil has great success in helping athletes achieve their goals in sports and life. He sees his biggest strength being his ability to be patient. "I think my patience has allowed me to be a successful coach and trainer because I can give my players and clients time to work through mistakes and learn the skills so they can get better". Being patient is definitely a great strength to have, in all aspects of life. Coach Sahil represents this in a great way.
How To Get Started
Coach Sahil has trained new players and players with much experience. We asked him what he recommends when a new athlete wants to start playing basketball. He said that "one of the easiest ways to get started in basketball is simply by picking up a basketball and beginning to dribble. Dribbling is a fundamental part of basketball that can be practiced anywhere". Some great advice, for any sport in general. Just pick that ball up and play. Play by yourself, friends, family. Just play and get familiar with the sport. With the use of the internet, anyone can read about or watch a video on how to shoot a basketball, but you only become better by practicing over and over and over.

Training Is In Session
As Sahil has many training sessions available on Final Drill, we asked him if all sessions are the same or if he structures them differently every time. He said that it all depends on what the clients' needs are - the sign of a great coach! "A typical session with me begins by getting to know my client's current skills by doing a series of ball-handling and shooting drills". He learns what skills the client wants to focus on so that he can create a development plan to help his clients grow as a basketball player. "A typical session will have a warm-up and cool-down period, and will have drills centered around ball-handling, shooting, footwork, and decision-making". If you want to pick up basketball as a new sport or excel as an athlete, sign up for a training session with Coach Sahil today!
Life Outside of Sports
Sports are a big part of our world, but we all have lives outside of sports and things we enjoy to wind down from through the week. Outside of coaching basketball, Sahil enjoys time with my family and friends, watching TV shows, eating at local restaurants, and eating desserts. Who doesn't love desserts?!

Two of Sahil's favorite quotes are... “Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit” and “Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard”. We like those too at Final Drill. We believe those embody the spirit of an athlete and what you need to be successful, at anything in life.
